About Robert Solomon

(Founder of Jazz-Dance-Theater)

Robert Solomon is an international choreographer, dancer, stage designer and dance teacher.

He began his career 1965 in NYC with Alwin Nikolais and Murray Louis and danced soloist in Nikolais‘ Ensemble on Broadway. With his own company Solomon toured throughout the USA.

In Europe he worked with Pina Bausch and other ambassadors of contemporary dance. Solomon taught improvisation, technique and choreography at London School of Contemporary dance and at Folkwangschule in Essen. Solomon is co-founder of the “Werkstatt e.V./ tanzhaus nrw” in Dusseldorf and currently acts as artistic director of
“Jazz-Dance-Theater” and “Placement”, a school for contemporary dance in Berlin.

Solomon developed his own movement style. His “Jazz-Dance-Theatre” is based on his African-American roots, on Laban’s conceptions of movement and Nikolais’ interdisciplinary approach of dance, music and arts. With “Jazz-Dance-Theatre” Solomon promotes his students’ individual creativity as the basic idea of dance and establishes relationships between professionals and amateurs of different backgrounds.
